This involves sanding the floor and then applying a wood stain and a wood finish. At the same time you should clean the hardwood once more using the appropriate vacuum cleaner in order to make sure that it s 100 dust free. They were pine wood which is what most builders use. Sand the floor with an orbital flooring sander and 80 grit sandpaper to flatten the wood grain and blend the filler.

Your floor needs to be absolutely dry before a new finish can be applied. More than likely it is the pad under the carpet that still has the stain. Use a palm sander to sand. I wanted to see what type of condition the wood was in so i proceeded.

The stain was on the carpet and soaked through to the pad the carpet got cleaned but spot cleaning only cleans the carpet not the deeper stain in the pad.

It wouldn t hurt to ask your builder though. If the floor has large and stubborn stains it may be necessary to refinish it. If there are small stains on the floor remove them with rubbing alcohol or fine steel wool. We did this project over a full weekend and two additional weeks nights following.

The carpet was old and dirty giving the entry a very dark and dated feel. Yes the builder grade is stainable the wood under the carpet on my stairs that i stained were builder grade. After sanding your floors you should plug any holes caused by nails by filling them with wood plugs or wood paste a combination of saw dust and white glue which you can make yourself. This is our stairs before.

Vacuum the floor then sand again with 100 grit paper.
